本展は、生命誕生から約40億年にわたる地球の歴史の中で起きた、5回の大規模な大量絶滅事変「ビッグファイブ」に焦点を当て、その原因とその後の生命進化の過程を多角的に紹介する特別展です。
小惑星の衝突や大規模な火山活動といった地球規模の環境変動に加え、ときには生命活動そのものが引き金となり、生態系は幾度も壊滅的な打撃を受けてきた。
しかしそのたびに、生き残った生物たちは新たな環境に適応し、絶滅したグループに代わって繁栄することで、多様な進化を遂げてきて、こうした観点から、大量絶滅は単なる破局ではなく、生命の進化と繁栄を促す契機とも捉えられる。
会場では、化石や岩石などの実物標本を通じて、絶滅の原因やその痕跡を科学的に読み解くとともに、古生物学、古気候学、古海洋学などの最新研究成果をもとに、生命史のダイナミックな変遷を紹介する。
監修は国立科学博物館の研究者10名が担当し、専門的かつ多角的な視点からビッグファイブの謎に迫る構成となっている。
展示の見どころとしては、球形の映像装置「大絶滅スフィア」による臨場感あふれる解説や、史上最大級の絶滅要因とされる火山活動を体感できる模型展示が挙げられ、また国内外から集められた貴重な標本も充実しており、恐竜の全身骨格やステラーダイカイギュウの全身化石、アメリカ・デンバー自然科学博物館のコレクションなど、大迫力の展示が並ぶ。
本展は、過去の絶滅事変を通して生命のしなやかな適応力と進化の歴史をたどり、現在の地球環境や生物多様性についても考える契機を提供するものである。
